Got Milk? Algeria’s Milk Crisis

Echorouk reports on reason’s behind the less than ample milk supply these days. Personally, this problem makes me a little nervous. I have a young daughter at home who loves her milks! Lately, I’ve been having to stock up on the milk when I can find it. It’s usually hit or miss when I get to the store.  The article suggests the farmer makes 23.35 DZD per liter. He is selling fresh milk. Which is 30 DZD per liter at the local merchant. Not much of a mark-up, considering there is a middle-man involved. 1 liter milk sacks re-constituted from imported milk-powder go for 25 DZD for the end consumer.

Oil Money No Cure-All to Algeria Economy

“The development program is trying to catch up with the infrastructure lag from the 1990s, which is a very good thing,” said Theodore Ahlers, head of the World Bank’s office for Maghreb - the region of Africa north of the Sahara Desert and west of the Nile River.

“But the key is to have a way to ensure strong growth and creation of jobs outside hydrocarbons in the long term, said Ahlers. “The battle is far from won.”
