Child kidnapping sparks concerns in Algeria - Magharebia.com

Algeria Kidnapping

Magharebia.com Reports:

Algerians are concerned about the number of children abducted, and the kidnapping of Yacine Bouchelouh has captured the attention of parents throughout the country. Official statistics show the disappearance of 841 children since 2001, ranging in age from 4 to 16.

Some Algerians attribute the trend of child abductions to criminal networks trafficking in human organs, while others feel the disappearances are sexually motivated.

That’s some very disturbing news! I’ll be thinking twice about where I let my kids run off to from now on! Click here for full article.

About 300 000 infants work in Algeria - News Article

LOL… Nice translation there fellas! I’ve never seen any ‘infants’ working around these parts. In all seriousness, though, my heart goes out to all the youngsters who do work for thier families. I see young boys collecting plastic, I don’t know where they sell it,  and sometimes selling beans on the sidewalks. Miskeen(poor boy). They don’t have a huge inventory, just a few kilos. These are children who are my boys’ ages and I don’t even let them go out of the house alone because they are too young to go without supervision.

Economic boom in Algeria - News Article

In this article the engineer they interviewed suggests he will sell cigarettes on the street if he can’t find work. It seems many of the youth have the same idea in mind. I spoke to a teacher here and she says the general ambition of the students is to make money any way they can and not to continue thier education. You can see this plan reflected in the vast number of TaxiPhones(kind of like a glorified phone booth), cigarette stands and coffee shops(and they don’t even sell cappiccinos or lattes). They are quick and cheap businesses to set up. The business owners are willing to settle for the little income they generate. And I say little because there is so much competition.
